2025 NHL Draft: Real-time Tracker – Hockey Writer – NHL Draft

After several months of preparation, the 2025 NHL entry draft has finally arrived. However, things look a little different from previous years. This year, the NHL voted for the scattered draft, meaning that while the NHL top prospects gathered at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, each team will stay at their base and come up with their draft picks remotely. The league has been working hard to get audiences excited about each of the top 32 options, inviting current and former stars and celebrities to announce each draft pick. Who will be there tightly around the package, though, making the most unpredictable days of the hockey season even harder to predict.

Matthew Schaefer is expected to be the first overall draft pick, but after New York Islanders surprisingly won the lottery draft, there is some debate now on whether they will be with local product James Hagens or top-ranked center Michael Misa, as both are arguably more pressing demand. The next five options are almost consistent, as most people predict that Caleb Denoyes, Porter Maton, Anton Frondel, Victor Eklund and Jack O’Brien will be the next board member to some extent, but the draft then does open. Brady Martin’s late surge at the U18 World Youth Championship attracted widespread attention from the Scouts, Radim Mirtka drew a lot of interest due to his 6-foot-6-foot frame and right-hand shot, and Roger McQueen looked like a top 10 until most of the season was injured. If the draft for 2024 is difficult to predict, the draft for 2025 is nearly impossible.
