Despite frequent PGA Tour events in recent years, Keith Mitchell had only one win, which was in 2019.
Mitchell scored 91 on Thursday in a 61-shot race to enter the second round with a one-shot lead. Denny McCarthy was second, with Rickie Fowler and Collin Morikawa in a group, shooting again in the Under-7 game.
Master Champion Rory McIlory shot 66 from the field in his first solo stroke since Augusta, giving him a 54-hole lead.
