PGA Tour abroad. In preparation for the Open Championship at Royal Patrush in Northern Ireland next week, golf first stopped in North Burwick, Scotland to open the Scottish Open at Renaissance Club.
The Renaissance Club is located next door to the Legend’s Open Venue and has been around since 2008. This will host the Scottish Open for the seventh consecutive year, and the third year is a co-approved event between the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. Renaissance clubs are not classic link designs, but “Linkish”. I like to classify it as a tribute to Scottish Link Golf built by Americans. Americans are longtime golf architect Tom Doak who runs another American link-based course, Pacific Dunes, part of Bandon Dunes Resort, Oregon.
The golf course is longer than average, with a size of 70 with a size of 7300 yards. There are five 3, 10 4 and 3 5. There is little to say, and the location by the sea brings the threat of bad weather into play. The greens are fescue, which run at a slower speed due to the threat of the weather.
Many of the sport’s big names are here this week, including local countryman and defending champion Robert MacIntyre. As a joint event, the top 75 players on the PGA Tour and the top 75 of DP World Tour.
If the weather is completely benign throughout the four days, then this could turn into some birdie festival and/or putting matches, but we have seen this match also be affected by the penalties. If when a tough happens, hitting will be the key. I looked at the touch: the tee was driven this week and got the stroke: hit, driving distance and palpation got the: approach. I also used birdies, or better get, fight, stroke get: placement (slow green) and 450-500 yards for 4-shot performance.
Doak has carried out an extensive redesign of the Memorial Park, where they competed in the Houston Open. I used this course as an old course at Renaissance Club and as well as the Riviera Country Club (Genesis Invitational), Augusta National, PGA National (Cognizant Classic), St Andrews (Cognizant Classic) and the Plantation course at Kapalua (Sentry).
Justin Thomas (35-1)
Thomas’s game in this game is more important than many top PGA Tour players, starting to enter Renaissance clubs when he finished ninth in 2019. He won at PGA National, performed very well in the Riviera for many years and won the championship at Kapalua. The prices are very generous for the best Ironman, Fried Man and Bird manufacturers in the world. Thomas’s problem is usually raised, but usually on linked courses we see being neutralized due to the slower green speed.
Sam Burns (37-1)
Burns only completed once outside the top 20 in his final eight games. Like Thomas, he made a lot of birdies and was an excellent incest. He is one of the best putters in the field, and he has ranked No. 4s in the last 24 rounds.
Ryan Fox (60-1)
It was Fox who beat Burns in the playoffs at the Royal Canadian Bank of Canada Open last month. Fox won his first PGA Tour victory at Myrtle Beach just a month ago. He has won 19 victories around the world and participated in the DP World Tour in 2017. His golf experience is even more than most players in the field. He has ranked 11th in SG: Goals, 13th in SG: Ball batting and 12th in 450-500 yards 4s. Fox ranked 12th here in 2023.
Victor Perez (125-1)
With the company of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele in this field, all of us will be getting some huge prices, including Perez, who ended 18th place at Memorial Park earlier this season. Perez has seven wins worldwide and three on the DP World Tour, including the 2019 Alfred Dunhill Link Champion. Perez is ranked seventh in SG: Goals in this field, and SG: Ball has 14th hit percentage in the last 24 rounds.
Jordan Smith (125-1)
The British are one of the longer batsmen in the field. He has ranked seventh in this field for SG: Off Tee in the last 24 rounds. He is SG: No. 21 in batting and 17th out of 4 and 4. He has been runner-up twice in the last seven DP World Tours. He ranked 12th here in 2023 and shot four rounds in the 60s.
Christopher Reitan (175-1)
Reitan won his last seven DP World Tours, two runner-ups and fourth. He has long exceeded the tee and is one of the best putters in the field. It will be his Scottish Open debut, but in his current form and price, I have to fly with Norwegian for a long time.
