Luka Modric leaves Real Madrid

Luka Modric confirmed that he will leave Real Madrid after this summer’s Club World Cup.

The Croatian midfielder held talks on a short-term contract renewal but failed to reach a deal and chose to leave rather than damage his legacy.

Modric, 39, joined Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2012 and has been a key player in their recent success, winning four La Liga titles and six Champions League games.

Modric Pens’ emotional letter

Modric wrote in an Instagram letter to Madrid fans: “The time is here. I never thought about that moment, but it’s football, in life, everything has a beginning and an end. On Saturday, I’m going to play my last game in Santiago Bernabéu.

“I arrived in 2012, eager to wear the shirts of the best team in the world and ambitious to do big things, but I can’t imagine what will happen next.

“Playing in Real Madrid has changed my life as a football player and as a person.

“I am proud to be one of the most successful eras of the best club in history.

“I want to thank the club for their hearts, especially President Florentino Perez, my teammates, coaches and everyone who helped me during this time.

“I have experienced incredible moments over the years and seemingly impossible to make a comeback, finals, celebrations and magical nights at the Bernabéu. We won everything and I am very happy. Very very happy.

“But, besides the title and victory, the feelings of all the Madrid fans deep down. I really don’t know how to explain my special connection with you, and the way I support, respect and love for me. I will never forget every clapping and all the love gestures you show my emotions to me.

“Leaving with all my heart, full of pride, gratitude and unforgettable memories. Although I will no longer wear this shirt on the court after the Club World Cup, I will always be a Madrid fan.”

Modric’s final match at Bernabeu will host Real Sociedad in Madrid on Saturday.

He will then be part of the team that will travel to the United States to compete in the Club World Cup. It is not clear whether he will continue to play or hang his boots elsewhere. Modric has become a minority owner of the Championship Swansea City championship club and has begun planning for his life.

Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez said: “Luka Modrić will remain in the hearts of all Madrid events forever, a unique and exemplary football player who has always embodied Real Madrid’s values. His football captures the imagination of the Madrid school and fans around the world. His legacy will live forever.”

The club has announced plans to commemorate his contributions in the weekend matches.
