Here, Football Fancast looks at many active managers who are currently out of work.
1
Massimiliano Allegri
Last Job: Juventus (May 2024)
The resume of the veteran Italian coach Massimiliano Allegri is glittering. Not only did he win six Serie A titles in the spells of Juventus and Milan, but the 57-year-old also won five Italian trophys.
It’s a serial winner, but Allegri left the old lady at the end of the 2023/24 campaign and still had no job, making him one of the excellent choices on this list.
2
Francesco Farioli
Last Work: Ajax (May 2025)
Francesco Farioli has been quietly becoming the name of an emerging manager in recent years, and his early career has brought him to Türkiye, France and the Netherlands.
His recent spell at Ajax put the Dutch Giants on the brink of an Eredivisie title, but the sensational collapse left them winning only one of the last five games, giving PSV (they themselves took the lead in one phase).
Despite qualifying for the Champions League, Farioli resigned after the dramatic season.
3
Jurgen Klopp
Last Job: Liverpool (May 2024)
Jurgen Klopp spent nine years at Liverpool in 2024, and the club resumed the England title in 2019/20 after winning their sixth Euro Cup a year ago.
Since then, Klopp has held a role with Red Bull, and in early 2025 he was appointed head of global football. He has since been linked to the vacancy in Rome, which recently bid farewell to Claudio Ranieri.
However, Klopp insists that he is energetic on Liverpool exports, so maybe he will spend some time before deciding on his next coaching role.
4
Julen Lopetegui
Last Work: West Ham United (January 2025)
Since its release by West Ham United in early 2025, Julen Lopetegui has been unable to improve the fate of the Hammer after replacing David Moyes at the London Stadium.
The Spanish resume with Sevilla becoming the Europa League champion is still impressive and has previously demonstrated his management skills with Wolves in the Premier League, so maybe a better match could bring out the best from the formerly realistic Madrid and Spanish bosses.
5
Thiago Motta
Last Job: Juventus (March 2025)
Thiago Motta announces himself in the management world by bringing Bologna to the 2023/24 Champions League. His success led him to join Juventus, who broke up with Massimiliano Allegri.
However, his spell as Biancori boss is incredible, with their Champions League qualification hopes under threat and their European campaign also quit the PSV playoffs.
Motta was fired in March as Serie A results continue to be disappointing.
6
Marco Ross
Last Work: RB Leipzig (March 2025)
In canoe, Marco Rose has a relatively high history.
After enjoying league success in Red Bull Salzburg, Rose has a handful of spells in Monchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund and his latest club, RB Leipzig.
His tenure blends a combination of Champions League qualification and mid-table, and the 2024/25 campaign saw RB Leipzig fail to leave the league stage in the Champions League and show up in Bundesliga. As a result, he is looking for his fifth job in eight years.
7
Roger Schmidt
Last Work: Benfica (August 2024)
Roger Schmidt has been unemployed since leaving Benfica in August 2024. In two seasons in Portugal, the German led the club to win the league championship in his Virginity and also won the Portuguese Super Cup.
Benfica was second only to Sporting CP last year, Schmidt left the club after scoring 7 points in the 2024/25 campaign.
He is no stranger to the pressure on managing the top and enjoys spells on PSV and Bayer Leverkusen, but it remains to be seen what he will do in the end.
8
Gareth Southgate
Last Job: England (July 2024)
Gareth Southgate succumbed to his eight years as England manager, bringing them to the brink of European glory twice.
The European Championships in the summer of 2024 ended, and his term ended, Southgate called after finishing two runners-ups and two runners-ups since 1990 and the first World Cup semi-finals.
Despite his recent links to Manchester United and former club Crystal Palace positions, he initially claimed he would spend a year following a cut in ties to the national team. Does this mean his next role is coming soon?

Erik Ten Hag
Last job: Manchester United (October 2024)
Erik Ten, who was fired by Manchester United, led them to League Cup victories in his first and second seasons, but that wasn’t enough to save his job.
The third and eighth place in the Premier League proved to be the judges of ten people. Except for Old Trafford’s side ending the bottom of the Champions League group in 2023/24, it’s clear that he can’t get the team to consistently perform the style they need.
Perhaps the spell in a less stressed club might restore him to his reputation. That being said, he is associated with a vacant role at Bayer Leverkusen in May, who recently left the German government club.
10
Edin Terzić
Previous job: Borussia Dortmund (June 2024)
Edin Terzić leads Borussia Dortmund to surprise in the 2023/24 Champions League final. It might be expected to beat Real Madrid 2-0, but it looks like it could bring a new era to the German side.
Just a week later, Terzic left Dortmund after taking charge of three seasons in two separate spells. Still young in management, he may be an ideal candidate for any major job open to Europe.
