
“We’re all close, we’re all hanging out, but the young people are definitely nervous because we don’t have family,” Lombardy said. “We’ll watch movies, I’ll cook for these guys…I love hanging out with these guys. Even if you go to some veterans’ houses and play with kids, all of this is very important for ice chemistry because you work with these guys.”
Indeed, Lombardi is an influential part of its future success. Lombardi was selected by the Red Wings in the fourth round of the 2022 NHL admission draft (total 113), and his young teammate will be Griffins’ experienced skateboarders to help them grow along the way.
“I’m a little hockey nerd, so I’m going to ask those questions, try picking their brains and learning from them,” Lombardi said. “Recently, I’ve been focusing on the standoff and all the advantages I can get. Even for one percent, I’m going to try to take it. Just talk to those older people, when they describe what it feels like in the NHL, it obviously motivates you. It motivates you want to get there and brings you the excitement of the future.”
