Three-time champion England and two-time champion Germany are both known to the winners at the 13th session of the U21 euro to rank first in Slovakia’s Group B.
England could fall behind Germany second by a draw, and they would still fail if Slovenia beat Czechia at the same time and pushed five goals toward the young Lions at the start of the game.
“I think we need to make the team look fresh,” England coach Lee Carsley told Uefa after a 0-0 draw with Slovenia on Sunday.
“Considering their age and the amount they play is important, we will make sure we take advantage of this team.”
Manchester City striker James McAtee has been self-critical after finding himself among England players to reach the fourth point of the final.
“There will be some fresh legs against Germany,” he said. “Hopefully we can get three points and be number one in the group because that’s our goal.”
Germany defeated Slovenia 3-0 in the opening match and made a comeback in the second half of the win over the Czech Republic 4-2 on Sunday, eliminating the opponent.
Nick Woltemade’s expert header gave the towering tournament fourth goal after Stuttgart’s hat-trick against Slovenia.
“We have a high personal quality,” the 23-year-old said, who was the starter against Portugal in the National League semi-finals on June 4.
“Our strength and quality are combined so we can win duels and score points. I’m very proud of the team.”
Nicolo Tresoldi scored Woltemade’s first goal against the Czech Republic, saying “the perfect second striker for me.”
“I really like playing with him, we just get to know each other,” the club’s prospect explained. “I’m really happy to be here, I’m happy to be playing with Nick and everyone else.
“We are a very, very good team and we just want to keep moving forward.”

Dennis Cirkin of Sunderland, Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace and Dane Scarlett of Tottenham Hotspur, did not join England due to medical issues.
Ipswich Town midfielder Omari Hutchinson started in England’s 3-1 victory over the Champions League and could recover, while Carsley might induce Carsley to start Jack Hinselwood after Brighton and Hove Albion players scored almost in place of Slovenia’s substitute.
Germany’s Merlin Rohl suffered a foot injury from a midfielder’s training that was maintained by midfielders, and was an unused alternative in their first two games.
Goalkeeper Jonas Urbig and midfielder Tom Bischof were in the 2025 Club World Cup with Bayern Munich, with forwards Maximilian Beier and Karim Adeyemi and Borussia Dortmund.
Head coach Antonio Di Salvo said he had no new damage, but could spin him around and would play every three days with the requirement of “very hard”.
“It’s important for Merlin to come back, and it’s important,” Di Salvo said. “I can do it from [Rohl’s] Everything is fine with a smile. We will see day after day if we can bring him in.
“Merlin is very versatile. He can play in many positions. I want to see who is available first and then we’ll see where he needs it.”
