Former U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark apologized for damage to property in one of the most historic locker rooms of golf during the opening of Oakmont Country Club in the outskirts of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania last week.
Clark, 31, lacked a stroke cut in the last hole of the second round on Friday. Clark reportedly damaged two lockers later, the first No Bising uping reported by Tron Carter, which was later confirmed by Golf.com.
Clark didn’t talk to the media at the round of the Travelers Championship or early this week, but he was asked about the locker room incident Thursday after being under 64 in TPC River Highlands.
“I have had a lot of highs in my career, especially the lows this year,” Clark said. “I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I am very sorry for what happened.
“But I also want to keep going, not just myself, but for Oakmont, on USGA, and focus on the rest of the year and what’s coming up,” he continued. “I still want to try to get the Ryder Cup team. I’m still looking for FedEx outside. So I started moving forward and focusing on those things.”
In the days after the loss, several Oakmont members were very disappointed by the news, proud of the club’s history and legendary locker room.
A long-time member told Golf.com: “Whoever did it, I don’t know who they are.
It’s not the first time Clark apologized for his course action. He threw a club behind the tee at the sponsor logo at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“I promise to handle my frustration with the course better and hope everyone forgives me in due time,” Clark wrote at the time.
In the course, Clark’s world ranking dropped to 27th, his lowest before winning the LA Country Club 2023 U.S. Open. He has a top 10 in 16 games this season and has not performed better than No. 50 in the last six games. He has also struggled in the Grand Slam since he won the game in LACC. From eight since, he missed four cuts and failed to register in the top 30.
