Jordan Spieth had put it on his 296-time PGA Tour before, and the only reason he didn’t finish a week was due to missing out.
Until this week.
Spieth was injured in a warm-up match before Thursday’s first round of the Travelers Championship, apparently suffering in the last nine games at TPC River Heights. Finally, on the 13th hole, Spieth said he couldn’t move on and quit the game.
It marks the first time the 297 career PGA Tour has left the tournament for the first time.
Jordan Spieth’s Challenge in TPC River Heights
Before the 2025 Travelers Championship, Jordan Spieth talked about the TPC River Highlands Hole Challenge No. 4 and fairway bunker.
Spieth shrunk after a shot in the fairway bunker on the 13th hole and told his caddie Michael Greller that he would not be able to go on and called for a rule to be made by an official. He apologized firmly to Greer and his partner rookie Luke Clanton.
When the Rules officer arrived, Spieth asked him what to do in this situation.
“I’ve never done it before,” he said.
“It’s the sides of my neck and upper back,” Spieth said later. “I quit 30 minutes early from the warm-up and then took my physiology back to the table…I just didn’t feel good…and then I hit the 13-shot tee and it was really hurt. I was teeing and I thought, if it was hard to turn around, I wouldn’t be able to make a backsws shot.
According to George Savaricas of the Golf Channel, when Spieth took turns, he was using a massage gun, leveraging a rule that allowed players to use percussion healing equipment during match rounds.
Spieth shrunk after his second shot on the 12th hole and said to Greller: “I just can’t be a man. I just can’t finish the defender.”
There he lets the bogey fall into five holes in 12 holes, then groans as he shoots the t-shirt into the bunker on the 13th.
“It’s incredibly frustrating because it’s 10 out of 12 [events] It’s the strongest for me and I’m very confident about it. “It’s just a very strange situation. It’s disappointing…we had a baby in a few weeks, so obviously I’m going to have a break and be healthy, but hopefully after a few days I’ve gone through the right process to get back to where I am. Yes, it’s a creepy.”
Spieth has recorded four top 10 this season, including the Memorial two weeks ago, which is more than he has in all 2024.
After the 2024 season, he underwent offseason wrist surgery and did not debut until Pebble Beach.
