Video replay assisted Wyndham Clark in a tricky embedded ball situation in the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Wyndham Clark arched the Arnold Palmer invitational rankings on Thursday, but the chaos of embedded goals almost brought his game to a start on Friday.
Clark scored 67 under 67 on Thursday at Bay Hill, giving him a two-stroke lead in a three-thirds group. He then started the second round early, kicking off the first hole at 10:05 a.m. ET.
Clark Bird Bird and assigned second place. He then reached 4333 and hit his t-shirt ball, which bounced a few times, had a little roll, rested on the fairway. At that time, the ESPN+ camera was going to find Clark on the ground, and it looked like he was taking embedded ball cushioning.
That’s where the chaos begins, because from the available camera perspective, it’s hard to say if Clark’s ball landed on his own court or another one. If it were him, he would be eligible for free relief. If it were someone else’s, he wouldn’t. And if he shouldn’t be relieved, he’ll be punished for it.
The broadcast caused Rich Pierson, director of PGA Tour rules and video, to explain the situation.
“Windham’s ball is not embedded,” Pearson said. “His ball bounces back and rolls into someone else’s court mark.”
“So obviously you can still get relief from it?” The broadcast team asked Pierson, Clark to stand on the ball after relaxing freely.
“I didn’t see him relieved from it,” Pearson said. “He was not allowed to be freed from someone else’s court.”
“So the lies we see from Wyndham now are different from the one I guess where his ball is placed?”
“Yes,” Pearson said.
Is Clark destined to issue a retrospective fine? According to the above conversation, it seems likely. But six holes later, Pearson returned to the broadcast for added clarity.
“Using the TV and our Shotlink cameras, we were able to make sure it did end with its original pitch arm,” Pearson said. “So there is no penalty.”
