John Daly always does things his own way, and the designs of his bags are no exception.
There's a collection of Sub 70 gear here, including drivers, irons and wedges, all decorated and engraved with his lion logo and personal signature, while the wedges are custom-made with razors from the University of Arkansas, where Daley and his son attend. Whales icon John Daly II is now gone.
All clubs are covered with lead tape and the oversized grips are 30 grams heavier than standard grips. The 3-wood is more mainstream, including TaylorMade Qi10 Tour (13.5°), and the putter may be Bettinardi or Scotty Cameron.
But perhaps the most notable is the inclusion of three hybrids.
The G430 series launches in early 2023, and as always with Ping, they offer a beautifully simple design and great performance. It uses the same Carbonwrap technology as the G430 fairway and LST driver. There is a dot on the top line to aid aiming, and the sole is flush with the turf.
The sound is more impressive and pleasant than previous Ping ranges, and the same spin effect means no matter where you hit the clubface, you'll have a more consistent spin rate, even if you miss the ball. .
It's height-adjustable, the socket has eight positions, and there are six available tilt angles, half of which Daly chose – 17, 22 and 26°. So Daly's longest iron is the hybrid 6-iron, which broadly speaking encompasses his 2, 4-iron and 5-iron.
What makes this so interesting and instructive is that Daly is a perfect fit for the kind of player who would never consider using a hybrid handle.
Tiger Woods says he will almost never use one, but Daly owns three of them and five with headcovers.
His fellow major winner, Fred Couples, has at least six woods in his bag.
“Everybody talks about them. My longest iron is a seven-iron. Who cares? I'm not strong enough anymore,” Couples said.
So if it's enough for legends like Daley and Couples to pack their bags with hybrid woods and woods, the average golfer should be happy to follow suit.
