After an epic season in 2024, Scottie Scheffler will start the new year on the sidelines.
On Friday, news broke that the world's No. 1 and defending FedEx Cup champion has withdrawn from the PGA Tour's 2025 season opener, the Sentry Championship at Kapalua Plantation Course in Maui, Hawaii, because of his Had a kitchen accident on Christmas Day.
“Scotty was stabbed by broken glass in the palm of his right hand while preparing dinner on Christmas Day,” Scheffler's manager Blake Smith said in a statement released by the PGA Tour. “Small shards of glass remained in the palm and required surgery. He was told he should be back to 100 per cent in three to four weeks.
Scheffler's injury removes the title of golfer with the most wins from last year at the Sentinel Tournament, formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, which once had only winners from the previous season. During an intense journey to 2024, Scheffler won seven championships, including his second Masters title, and won Olympic gold. He also joined Tiger Woods as the second golfer to be named the PGA Tour Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons.
While Scheffler has always been unstoppable on the course, he made headlines in May when he was arrested in a traffic accident while driving to Louisville's Valhalla Golf Club before the second round of the PGA Championship. Although the charges against Scheffler were quickly dropped, the image of the best player in an orange prison jumper remains among the game's most enduring images of 2024.
As 2024 comes to a close, the 28-year-old Scheffler shows no signs of slowing down. His most recent start came at the Hero World Challenge earlier this month, where he again prevailed, six strokes ahead of runner-up Tom Kim.
Fans will now have to wait for Scheffler to return to action. His next departure is on January 16 at the American Express Hotel in La Quinta, California.
The Sentinels, meanwhile, will continue playing without him from Jan. 2-5.
