World number one Scotty Scheffler underwent surgery after injuring his hand while cooking Christmas dinner.

The 28-year-old American was forced to withdraw from the first game of the season, next week's Sentinel Game in Hawaii, after suffering a cut on his right hand from broken glass.

The PGA Tour said: “World No. 1 and 2024 FedEx Cup champion Scotty Scheffler has withdrawn from the PGA Tour's 2025 season-opening Sentinel Tournament, which will be held next week (Jan. 2-5 ) at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii.

Scheffler, who won seven PGA Tour titles last year, hopes to return to action at the American Express Championship on Jan. 16.

His agent Blake Smith added: “While preparing dinner on Christmas Day, Scotty was stabbed in the palm of his right hand by broken glass.

“Small shards of glass remained in the palm and required surgery. He was told he should be back to 100 per cent in three to four weeks.

“Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from the Sentinel. His next scheduled event is the American Express.

Scheffler isn't the only golfer to have suffered misfortune in recent days, with Norway's Viktor Hovland posting an X-ray on his official Instagram account showing his little toe pointing at an eerie Shocking angle.

“I'm wrapping myself in bubble wrap on the way to Hawaii,” 2021 Open champion Collin Morikawa said in response to Hovland's news.
