Kraken pull off dazzling comeback in 5-4 overtime win over Canucks – Hockey Writers – NHL News

Playing at home this season has been an extremely questionable proposition for the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks are just 7-7-5 coming into Rogers Arena and they think they've turned that around on Saturday (Dec. 28) against the Seattle Kraken. The visitors, led by Vince Dunn, had something to say about that and completed an incredible comeback from three goals down in overtime to win 5-4.

Brock Boeser breaks down the Open

A somewhat quiet affair began in the opening period when Seattle's Shane Wright was sent to the bin at 15:54 for hooking Max Sasson.

The home team immediately took profits, starting with a victory in the Kraken's final face-off. Jake DeBrusk fired a one-time shot from the opposite right circle that was gamely deflected away by Philipp Grubauer. But the rubber is sent straight up into the air. Gravity pulled the ball back into the huddle and Brock Boeser deftly fired a shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Canucks control second quarter

That was all the scoring until midfield, when the goal lights turned even more.

Marty Beniers hasn't scored since Nov. 11 against the Chicago Blackhawks. His 19-game scoreless drought finally ended at 1:18 when he fired a wrist shot from the slot that gave Canucks' Thatcher Demko a chance, but Not enough.

The Canucks were undeterred and made the Kraken pay for not cashing in on the power play. The final shot went wide, with Teddy Brugger deftly passing a long pass to Connor Garland, who left the penalty area after the penalty kick. The latter delivered a perfect slap shot past Seattle's goalkeeper for a 2-1 lead.

The Canucks put their opponents in trouble late in the second quarter as more pressure from Seattle went unrequited. Vancouver got back on rubber and exploded, with Carson Soucy firing a pinpoint pass from the crease to Boeser, who gleefully fired home for a 3-1 lead, And scored twice for himself.

Seattle snaps victory from defeat

Vancouver tried to avoid third-quarter drama when they opened the fourth period at 3:09 of the game. Seattle's defense fell asleep for a moment, and that's exactly what DeBrusk needed to go unnoticed. JT Miller sent a pass and DeBrusk confidently beat Top Grubauer to make the score 4-1.

That's when things got interesting.

Vancouver's goal was disallowed when the puck was gloved. With 16 minutes left in the game, the score was still 4-1.

At 15 minutes and 15 seconds, Seattle tied the score to two points. Vince Dunn passed the ball to Jaden Schwartz, who redirected the ball from close range. 4-2.

The Kraken elected to pull their netminder to gain a human advantage, and boy did it work. Seattle's pressure caused major problems for the Canucks, and a clumsy cleanup attempt resulted in the puck falling on Dunn's stick, where it found its way into the net clear and he passed it past Demko for 18:48. Rewrite the score to 4-3.

Seattle tied the game at 19:10 through Schwartz, who almost single-handedly slid into the slot, fired away and knocked the rebound out of traffic. Incredibly, this game required overtime.

The mesmerizing comeback was complete when Dunn scored his second goal of the game at 2:15. The Canucks turned the ball over poorly on offense, allowing Dunn to put Biscuit in the basket from the other way and be hugged by his teammates.

Joy on one end, heartbreak on the other. The Kraken have had some crazy games this season, but this one could be even better. Seattle will host Utah Hockey Club on Monday (December 30). The Canucks have a few days to wash away the bitter taste before taking on the Calgary Flames on New Year's Eve.
