Draymond Green also explained his situation after he had a heated moment on the court with teammate Buddy Hield during the Warriors' win over the Suns on Saturday night.
After the Warriors turnover, Green wasn't happy with Hield, and the broadcast microphone clearly captured him telling Buddy: “Wake up. Or go sit down. Yingshi.”
After the game, Green said that as he learned to play with Buddy, he tried to be Buddy's leader.
“As a leader, you have to try different approaches. Sometimes you go to a person and sometimes you don't,” Green told reporters. “I've played 30 games with Buddy now. To understand what turns him on, you have to try different things. Jonathan Kuminga, I went and I said, 'Hey, this is what I need. Things you do. Look at it this way. I don't think he would do it if I yelled at him. [won’t] listen.
“Stephen [Curry]sometimes I go to him, sometimes I yell at him. He reacts to both. One thing I learned as a leader [Michigan State coach Tom Izzo] Regarding leadership, you have to lead people who make up a team. But leading someone looks different than leading the next person. You have to figure out what turns men on. What keeps that guy going. So, I'm still figuring it out. To handle Buddy like I did, that's what we needed in that moment. “The microphone caught everything today. I don't care. I'll just say it into the microphone. I don't care at all.
Green said moments like this happen often and Hield doesn't take it personally.
“…Don't be that guy who can't be yelled at, I'll never be that guy. Teammates yelling at me? Great. I'll probably say something back. Oh, well, guess what? Buddy said something back to me.” We are not dictators. It’s just that everyone has to listen to what you say. He will respond, and I will respond.
“We move on and that's how it should be. It's not always peaches and cream. Whoever thinks that is an idiot. We've lost three games in a row. We made mistakes at key moments of the game and needed to get good shots on goal. Let's film it.
The four-time champion went on to explain how experience can greatly help someone like Hield.
“I happened to play a lot of championship basketball, a lot of meaningful basketball. Buddy didn't have the opportunity to play a lot of meaningful basketball in this league,” Green said. Guess what? Our job is to make sure he understands what that means.
