James spoke candidly with NBA media about his career on his 40th birthday.
“I'm in my thirties, so I wake up and I'm like, 'Oh my God, shit, you're 40 years old?'” James said. “It's really kind of funny, knowing where I am and seeing that I'm still playing the game at a high level and still being such a young guy but getting old in the scheme of things for how many years I've been in this profession.”
James joked that he could keep playing longer, but he won't.
“Honestly, if I really wanted to, I could probably play this game at a high level, probably another game – it's weird for me to say that – but probably five or seven more if I wanted to. years,” James said. “But I wouldn't do that.”
The Lakers superstar was then asked if winning the chips with the Lakers would motivate him to continue playing.
“When you ask that question, the first person I think of is Jason Kelce,” James said, referring to the former Philadelphia Eagles center who now serves as an NFL analyst for ESPN. “Earlier this year, he sat down [interview] and [Eagles quarterback] Jaylen feels hurt talking about the same factors, in fact [the Eagles are] This year has been so good, have you ever thought about coming back and maybe not retiring? certainly [he has]. But he's very happy with the decision he made.
Although the team is 18-14 this season and ranked seventh in the Western Conference, he still has high expectations for the Purple and Gold.
“Right now, I think we're a very good team,” James said. “I think we have a chance to compete with anybody in the league. Are we at a championship level? Can we win a championship now? No, I don't think so. But that's good because we still have a lot of room to improve.
“I don’t know if it’s going to determine whether I stick around longer because it’s not going to change my career in any sense or way.”
