As expected, Kings XI Punjab (PBKS) have been named Shreyas Iyer as captain of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The right-handed batsman was auctioned by the Punjab-based franchise for a whopping INR 2,675 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

The right-handed batsman led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a stellar performance in IPL 2024 and helped them win the coveted title after a long wait of 10 years. KKR CEO Venky Mysore said the three-time IPL champions were keen to retain Shreyas for the upcoming season but insisted on participating in the auction to test his market value.

In a last minute moment on Sunday, January 12, Kings XI Punjab made a post on their social media to introduce their new captain to their fans.

“I am honored that the team has placed confidence in me. I hope to repay the trust shown by the management to achieve our maiden title,” Shreyas told PBKS after being appointed captain.

Shreyas led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in December last year. However, under his leadership, Mumbai failed to reach the knockout stages of the subsequent Vijay Hazare Trophy. The 30-year-old is expected to be named in the India ODI squad for the three-match series against England next month. He is expected to feature at number four in the upcoming 2025 Champions League. .
