Former New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson has started heaping praises on the Pakistan Super League (PSL) under the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. Hesson is a PSL fan and downgraded the IPL.
Mike Hesson has taken a subtle swipe at the Indian Premier League following the conclusion of the 2025 PSL Draft. Islamabad United head coach has criticized the IPL and its rules. Notably, Hesson has served as head coach, director of cricket operations of Kings XI Punjab (now Kings XI Punjab) in the IPL and head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Mike Hesson has stirred up a storm with his bold comments about the Indian Premier League. He was particularly critical of the Indian Franchise League's controversial “impact player rule.” Hesson welcomed the Pakistan Super League and made it clear that he does not want the IPL to dominate Pakistan's T20 league.

The former New Zealand coach has openly said that he doesn't like the IPL's “impact player rule” but is happy that there is no such rule in the PSL. Hesson noted that he does not want the controversial rules of the Indian League to make it to the Pakistan Super League.

What are the impact player rules in the Indian Premier League?
Meanwhile, IPL 2023 has introduced the “Impact Player Rule” that allows teams to make strategic changes to their lineup during the tournament.
Before the game, each team can choose five substitute players in addition to their starting lineup, and they must share a card when throwing the ball.
During an IPL match, the captain can swap a player from the playing XI with an impact player. For example, a team might bring in extra batsmen when chasing a target, or specialist pitchers when defending a target.

Why did BCCI introduce this rule?
The BCCI introduced this rule to make the league more interesting, but many have been criticizing this rule as it affects the growth of all-rounders and their value. It is worth noting that IPL and PSL will completely clash this time due to the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
In fact, the Pakistan Super League has been moved to the April-May window as Pakistan will host the 2025 Champions Trophy during the PSL window, which is February-March. IPL 2025 is expected to be held from March 21 to May 25 and PSL 2025 from April 8 to May 19.
