Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have decided to sack their title-winning captain Shreyas Iyer Before the big auction. The star batsman was not retained and Kings XI Punjab (PBKS) bought him for a whopping Rs 267.5 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
KKR's move came as a shock to the cricketing fraternity as this was the first time that the winning captain of the previous edition did not feature for the team in the next edition. Recently, the Mumbai batsman opened up about the reasons behind KKR and him parting ways with the cricketer deciding to put his name under the hammer in the auction to be held in November 2024.
“Of course I had a great time winning the championship KKR. The fan following is outstanding, they are exciting to be in the stadium and I loved every moment I spent there. Obviously, we had a conversation right after the IPL tournament. But for months, we had a holdover and no concrete efforts to negotiate retention. I'm confused about what's going on. So, due to lack of communication, we fell into a situation where we parted ways. Those are its strengths and weaknesses,” Iyer told The Indian Express.
“Yeah, obviously it's disappointing because when you don't have a certain line of communication and if you know things a week before the hold date, then obviously there's something missing there. So, I just had to pick up the phone. Whatever was written should happen,” added the PBKS captain.

Talking about Shreyas Iyer's performance in the IPL, he has played for two teams so far and played 116 games in the team championship, scoring 3127 runs at an average of 32.23. This will be the third team he plays for in his IPL career and hopes to lift the trophy, possibly the first for this Punjab-based franchise.
