SAN DIEGO — Ludwig Aberg shot a 9-under 63 Wednesday to move ahead of Denny in the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on Wednesday at what he calls his favorite place in the world. · Walker and Hayden Springer had two shots.
Aberg leads the first round on the PGA Tour for the first time after posting the best opening round of his short career. The 25-year-old Swede took advantage of the ease of play on the North Course at Torrey Pines, hitting 16 of 18 greens during the regular season while notching eight birdies and two on the Coastal Links. 1 eagle.
“I like to hit a lot of drivers, and I feel like I did it a lot today and I'm probably going to do the same thing tomorrow,” Aberg said. “(I love) any golf course that looks like this, and when you can see the view, Torrey Pines is a really, really cool place to be.”
The 25-year-old Walker was in fine form in his fourth career start on the PGA Tour. He posted his best score on the first day on the more difficult South Course, averaging 72.487, while the North Course averaged 70.218.
Walker and Springer are ahead of Lanto Griffin, Zach Blair, 48-year-old Zach Johnson and 20-year-old Aldridge Pogett – all of whom play on the North Course.
Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, the highest-ranked player on the field and winner of the Kapalua Sentinel Tournament, shot a 68 on the South Course.
Aberg finished ninth in his debut at Torrey Pines last year and started the season fifth in Maui after undergoing knee surgery last fall. After winning Tour Rookie of the Year honors in 2023, he had none last year despite six top-five finishes, including runner-up finishes at the Masters, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and BMW Championship.
“I didn't have any problems after the surgery, so that was really good,” Aberg said. “I think Maui is the ultimate test for this. I got some blisters on my foot. That's another story, but the knee is holding up great. Really looking forward to getting back and playing a lot of games. … .I'm excited to look forward to playing a good round of golf.
Walker, a rookie who qualified for the PGA Tour on the Korn Ferry Tour, posted a bogey-free round after missing the cut in the first two rounds of the season.
The prestigious event, held on San Diego's north coast, has fewer stars than usual this year. Collin Morikawa withdrew on Sunday and Will Zalatoris withdrew on Wednesday morning.
The Farmers Insurance Open begins Wednesday and ends Saturday to avoid a final-round conflict with the NFL division championship game.
