Every Sunday evening, please register to golf’s travel secrets to get an unfiltered opinion from our writers and editors as they break down the hottest topics in the sport. This week, in the Augusta Nationals Masters situation, we have a key topic every night.
Rory McIlroy, who has a 54-hole lead in the 2025 Masters, will start Sunday at 12, with two shots from Bryson DeChambeau, leading four at Corey Conners. Others are still lurking further afield, but McIlroy is at his best (final) finishing his career grand slam. So, did he finally do it on Sunday? Who won the Masters?
Jessica Marksbury, Senior Editor (@jess_marksbury): Honestly, we can’t ask for a better master on Sunday showdown. Rory vs. Bryson, again! Before Bryson drained his monster birdie putt at 18, I felt like the masters were shaping the real Rory. But Bryson’s energy is so infectious. Augusta has nothing. Rory’s mission will be to start the hot spots as it is today and stay steady. Disasters are not allowed. Bryson will definitely be pulled out, so if he gets an early advantage on Rory, it can be hard to overcome it. Honestly, I don’t know what will happen. But my heart hopes Rory hopes for this very much. This is his chance to eliminate so many demons forever. The more I think about it, the more sure I am not going to let this guy slip away. Professional Grand Slam. Revenge the U.S. Open at Pinehurst. Can’t write better scripts.

Josh Sens, Senior Writer (@Joshsens): Exactly. This is the perfect script. Redemption of Rory is the most meaningful ending. I like the way he spoke this time. Remember when he joined Patrick Reed in 2018 in the final group? McIlroy talked about the pair ahead of time, like a showdown with Reed. On Saturday night, he talked about staying in “my own little bubble.” That’s better headroom. He waited for another major (and professional grand slam) to end tomorrow. Either that, or Scottie Scheffler shoots 61 to pass him.
Maddi MacClurg, editor and producer (@maddimacclurg): It’s undoubtedly an exciting final round. While I would love to see a loser bring home a green coat, Rory’s game is now undeniable – this time, he has an extra advantage: patience. There are times during today’s rounds where young Rory may lose his mental struggle, but now he is obviously working hard and waving while counting. His balls are almost surgically accurate, and when he misses the green, he scrambles brilliantly. Although I wasn’t willing to play against Bryson almost sharp, his inconsistent distance control with the iron could cost him, especially when the wind spins at the back of Augusta’s nine.
Zephyr Melton, Assistant Editor (@zephyrmelton): I want to think Rory finally conquered the demons and won in Augusta, but the heartbreaking recipe is there – and the same character for Pinenurst. My heart says Rory finally did it, but my thoughts say Bryson tear open his heart again. All I know is that this will be one on Sunday.
Josh Schrock, Associate News Editor (@schrock_and_awe): Given the recent turmoil in the game over the past few years, Sunday will be the day golf deserves. The psychological examination of McIlroy will be on Sunday and it will be fun to combine with DeChambeau. He admits to “get out of the bubble” when Pine Hurst collapses. If he stumbles upon it tomorrow, I will worry about the end result. But life can only be so cruel. McIlroy was kicked over and over again, continuing to get dusty, going again. He plays the best golf ball in the world and I think he’s stuffed with dechambeau tomorrow in the locker.
