Mark O’Meara and Tiger Woods have been friends for decades.
Woods’ famous O’Meara walked out of the course when the two played in Isleworth before the 1997 Masters. Woods shot 59 the day before and came out on his second ace. It’s Omela.
Woods went on to win the 1997 Masters. O’Meara then won her own green jacket in 1998.
O’Meara has great seats for the Tiger, but he told Golf Subpar hosts Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz that he still believes Woods has underperformed in his career.

“I’ll tell you, I’m looking at the Tiger’s career, and if you walk strictly by performance and numbers, Jack Nicklaus is the greatest player. But when I look at the work the Tiger does and the era he does. Look, Jack does, he does well, he’ll go against the best career, but I’ll say, when I look at the career of everyone. If everyone has to play persimmon clubs and old-fashioned golf, I think Tiger Woods will win more games.
For O’Meara, the impact of Woods on golf’s popularity cannot be underestimated.
“I think Tiger Woods is the greatest player,” Omela said. “I really did. His career was shortened by injury. Who would dream of a golfer coming, not only one of the greatest golfers and one of the greatest athletes, but one of the most famous figures of golfers in the world as a golfer. Tiger makes golf cool.
