Merino says Arsenal has “full respect” for Real Madrid

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino said the Gunners will receive “full respect” at Real Madrid on Wednesday, even though their Champions League quarter-finals are far from reaching a 3-0 lead.

Merino hit two amazing free kicks at Emirates last week to put Mikel Arteta’s side in the aftermath of command.

But Real Madrid has won 15 Champions League games, and Merino has not ruled out a surprising comeback.

He told Cardina Sell: “The real halo – and it’s worth it. But football is unpredictable. Everything will happen. It’s an open tie

“Their quality is well known. Any of them will hurt you at any time.

“We know exactly who we are facing – total respect. We are going to a cruel stadium. We will be full of confidence, yes, but there is also hunger and humility, ready to do our best.

“Can they make a comeback? Come on, they’ve done it before, right?”

Merino has been used as an emergency move forward this season since Arsenal caused damage to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

Merino said he didn’t know if he would continue to run out, but was happy with his goal in the first round.

“It’s also good to finish,” he said.

“Obviously, Declan’s two rockets were covered a little bit, but that’s what I will always remember.

“Declan was built for big games and strengthened when we needed him the most.”
