San Jose Sharks Captain Logan Couture officially announced the end of his hockey career at a press conference this afternoon and confirmed reports on the event held yesterday.
Couture was ranked ninth by the Sharks in the 2007 NHL admission draft and has been with San Jose since 2009. However, he has never competed as he has ended up with a groin disease that has ultimately led to his retirement since January 31, 2024.

Sharks and Haute Couture held a press conference at the SAP Center, with both current and former Sharks players and coaches attending the conference. Couture talks about his lifelong passion for hockey and his appreciation for his time in San Jose. He tells the main moments of his career, such as promotion to the NHL, his first professional goal and a key contribution in the Sharks’ playoffs. He points out that playing the rarity of a whole career for a team.
“I’m honored to be a shark for such a long time,” he said. “I have not only hockey memories from this place, but also from my family memories. My two kids were born here, so this place is always special.”
Couture also talks about his as a player and the legacy he wants to leave.
“I just hope I’m remembered to be a very hard-working player,” he said. “Someone will do anybody who wins, whether it’s scoring, blocking the ball, really what.”
Couture continues to thank all kinds of people in his professional and personal life, talking about those who support him on the journey and teaching him how to play in the NHL. He specifically wrote down the Sharks fans, whose reputation is one of the loudest and most enthusiastic people in the league.
After Couture finished his speech, General Manager Mike Grier talked about his impressions and memories of Couture’s career. He noted that Couture was one of the main reasons why he wanted to be the general manager of San Jose and praised Couture for its all-round ability and leadership.
The main part of the press conference ended with videotapes as Couture, which consisted mainly of recording information from some of his former coaches and teammates who were unable to attend, and the focus of his career.

Couture’s career didn’t end as he wanted, but his golden age was crucial to the best season in shark history. He has earned over 700 professional regular season points in his last 1,000 games and scored 101 points. He made the playoffs eight times in his career, leading the NHL once in the playoffs scoring, goals and assists. He has worked in injury for 15 years throughout his career and would not have achieved the same success without him. Although his time in the NHL is difficult, his lasting influence should be a key part of a perennial contender, playing better in the most important game.
