Golf is a well-known affluent game, and its appeal to celebrities and important people means that those who play it at the highest level usually have a high bar for celebrities. Actors and actresses? Um. Head of State? Um. Industrial giant? Bly.
But that didn’t stop an LPGA star from rising at the Chevron Championship Thursday morning and moving forward with an unusual hit game. reason? Opportunity to compete with her childhood hero.
Haeran Ryu was so excited when she saw the pairing board in the first two rounds of the year’s No. 1 major because it showed she would pair with Yani Tseng. Ryu, 24, grew up watching Tseng, 36, who won five major titles between 2008 and 2011 at the height of her strength. In South Korea, Tseng is Ryu’s favorite player and most of her professional games.
“Yes, my dad is a big fan of Yani Tseng,” Ryu said Thursday. “She was still on the LPGA Tour until I became a professional player. [When] Yani [was] At the top of the rankings, he told me, “Hey, come here, you can see this golf channel. Yani is going to top it. Yes!'”
When she arrived on the scene Thursday morning at Carlton Woods, Ryu pointed out her views about introducing Tseng and shared some of Ryu’s memories and watched Tseng with her father.
“She said, ‘I thank your father so much,’” Ryu said. “Yes, it was an incredible day.”
There is a lovely irony among those memories of RYU at the Chevron Championship Thursday, as her family can see it when she returns to her native South Korea. she Together with her long-term hero, she reached the top of the rankings.
Ryu shot a bogey-free game at Chevron on Thursday, enough to get an 18-hole lead in his first major this season in his 65-shot below 65. Ryu will have the chance to share some turf with Tseng at least on Carlton Woods’ day – the pair will start the game with other star Jeeno Thitikul on Friday at 2:10 pm.
After that, however, in order to continue pursuing another person: her first major championship victory, the dream of childhood will end.
