
Springfield, Massachusetts. …The American Hockey League today announced the Texas Star Forward Justin Hryckowian Has been voted as the winner Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award As an outstanding AHL rookie in the 2024-25 season.
The award is voted by coaches, players and media members representing each of the league’s 32 cities.
After making his debut in Texas later in the 2023-24 season, Hryckowian is one of the top two-way forwards in the 2024-25 AHL. He finished first on the league’s rookie roster with 60 points (22 goals, 38 assists) and tied for third among all rookie forwards with a Plus/Minus rating (+15) in 67 star games, not having more than three consecutive games throughout the season. Hryckowian was named the AHL rookie of the month in December and competed in Texas’s AHL All-Star Classic in February, where he had goals and three assists to help the Central Division win the All-Star Challenge of the Year.
Hryckowian is a 24-year-old Yle Bizard, Que. , signed with Dallas on March 20, 2024 at Northeastern University, where he won the Hockey East Conference Award for Best Defensive Forward Award twice. He made his NHL debut in Chicago on December 29 and recorded an assist in five games against Dallas. Hryckowian is the fourth star to be selected as the AHL Outstanding Rookie in the past 12 seasons.
The award was first presented by the AHL in 1947. Dudley (red) Garretta promising young player who died while serving in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. Garrett split his sole professional season into 1942-43 years between the Providence Reds in the AHL and the New York Rangers in the NHL. Since 1936, the American Hockey League has continued to be the top development league for all 32 national hockey league teams. Nearly 90% of players in NHL games are AHL graduates, and the American Hockey League has been more than 100 members of the Hockey Hall of Fame for years.
The winner of the 2024-25 Les Cunningham Award (MVP) will be announced on Friday.
