The announcement that Sullivan will be appointed as the next Rangers head coach should not shock anyone. Once Sullivan separated the way Pittsburgh penguins, everyone connected the dots to New York. Rangers general manager Chris Drury just signed a contract and he has been hoping Sullivan for a long time.
NHL Rumor: Mike Sullivan’s availability changes head coaching landscape
Drury was reportedly planning to hire Sullivan before settling in Gerard Gallant. He even wanted to get Sullivan before hiring Peter Laviolette. After that, Laviolette and Galant continued to move forward due to the failure of the second year. But once the penguins decide to move in the other direction, the pieces are in place.
Yesterday afternoon, things began between Sullivan and the Rangers
this #NYR No official announcement has been confirmed or announced, but it sounds like things are getting closer and Mike Sullivan is the 38th head coach in franchise history.

As the Stanley Cup playoffs progressed, reports began to surface, saying Sullivan would join the New York Rangers.
Sources told the source @kevinweekes & I. It is expected to be one of the richest coaching contracts in NHL history.

Chris Drury, general manager of the Wanderer, in the press release: “Mike Sullivan has established himself as one of the NHL’s leading head coaches,” Drury said. “Given his many achievements throughout his coaching career, including two Stanley Cups and an internationally leading U.S. leadership team – Mike brought a championship-level presence behind the bench. I’ve known Mike very well over the years, including when we started the process when we worked with us as a teammate in the 1997 World Championships and our sharing process. It’s immediately clear that he’s the best coach to lead our team.”
NHL Rumor: Break down the coach’s opening and where everything is
Mike Sullivan is one of the most accomplished coaches on the market. He coached the Pittsburgh Penguins to win the Stanley Cup in 2016 and 2017. However, the Penguins have not made the playoffs in the past three seasons and have not won the playoffs since 2018.
Sullivan’s record in 753 regular season games was 409-255-89. Before becoming the man in Pittsburgh, he also served as an assistant coach for the Boston Brown Bears, Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks. There were some questions about the staff, and John Tortorella had the opportunity to join New York in four of his American players.
My source added Dolan is a fan of Tortorella and wanted to add him in some capacity…no specified content, so I said to join.
Now @kevinweekes and @emilymkaplan The report said that with Sullivan taking over as head coach, he could rejoin the organization.
Let’s take a look

NHL Rumor: New York Rangers can’t run back
But despite Tortorella talking to the Rangers about rejoining them, he finally decided to object.
John Tortorella does speak to the Rangers, but will not rejoin after all.
I believe Sullivan’s contract has been five years – this is the highest annual salary for coaches in NHL history.

Beyond the staff, the next issue will be the team’s advancement with players like Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, K’Andre Miller, as they hope to reshape the culture. Getting a coach helps build this culture.
