Bryson DeChambeau has a unique but practical bag setting.
Johnny Wunder
When Bryson DeChambeau was almost Quail Hollow’s 227 yards and 17 holes in the first round of the PGA Championship, his ball was parked within an inch of the Cup – his tongue was shaking.
227 yards 7 Iron?
Cool your jets, people! Yes, Bryson hit the miles, but don’t forget that the numbers at the bottom of the iron don’t mean too much. For you or Bryson or any golfer in between, you can be tailored to a specific golfer to hit a specific distance at a specific height at a specific number of spins. The numbers printed on them are just a number!
Bryson has used one of the sets – i.e. all His irons are 37.5 inches long, all upright, and because of Bryson’s thick, extreme launch and rotation parameters, etc., all are the opposite.
Here is his current iron progress:
iron: Avoda Bryson Proto (5i-P)
Swing weight: C2
Axis: La Golf Bryson 125G 6TX
Lies: 66.25@37.5
Loft: 18/22/26/30/35/40
wedge: Ping S159 RAW (45@5 bounce, 50@6 bounce); Ping Glide 4.0 RAW (55, 60); All Special Bryson Grinder
Swing weight: C2+
Axis: La Golf Bryson 125G 6TX
Lies: 66.25@37.5
DeChambeau’s composition guard targets two main things: over-spinning and extremely high altitude. For example, if you give him a 34-degree loft and a standard isolated 7 iron of 37-inch length, he will hit it directly with a spin of about 10,000-12,000 rpms (too much!). The rest of his bag is also unpredictable. Therefore, to build a functional set – based on the yardage coverage from 0 to 360 yards, a single-length iron is best for him.
DeChambeau is based on rotation and launch, back into his attic numbers. That’s it. The numbers in his club – i.e. 5, 6, 7 – have no meaning except to determine what club he is trying to catch. If it was my schoolbag, I would mark the irons with their carry number or loft.
For Dechambeau, the point is that his numbers on iron are not self-interested. This is a practical thing. The result is self-evident, and I respect him standing alone on the mountain of “things that work for me”.
