Alyssa Healy hopes to be fit again in time for historic Women's Ashes match for Australian women's cricket team

Alyssa Healy has pleaded with fans to watch the historic Women's Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground instead of the Men's Ashes Test her husband is watching in Sri Lanka, amid a battle for attention between Australia's first cricketing couple.

This summer's women's Ashes competition will begin with ODI and T20 matches next month and end with a pink-ball showdown in Melbourne, while the men's team will travel to Sri Lanka for two Test matches.

Healy, whose husband is Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, said cricket fans were spoiled for choice but a historic day-night Test at the MCG was a rare opportunity.

“Come and see us, it's more exciting,” Healy said on the sidelines as he announced the women's white-team roster. “It's great for the boys to play in the Test series, but [this is] A day-night Test match at the MCG.

The 13-player team includes seniors Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Ashleigh Gardner and vice-captain Talia Tahlia McGrath, as well as emerging stars Annabel Sutherland, Phoebe Litchfield and Georgia Voll. Powerful striker Grace Harris will join the team for the three T20 matches following the three ODI matches.

Despite knee problems, Healy is still scheduled to play wicket-keeping in the series, while all-rounder Sophie Molyneux is out due to knee surgery.

The captain said naming the white-ball team now would allow players to prioritize those games while providing flexibility for testing, which could be decisive under the points system used in the series.

“What we've done in Test cricket over the past few seasons has been a bit different to what we've done in white-ball games, so there are some reasons why the Test squad hasn't been announced yet,” she said.

“We'll probably be looking at that over the next few weeks to see the form and load-out of all the bowlers in domestic cricket and how they're going to prepare for Test matches.”

Despite losing two ODIs and two T20s, Australia won the first Ashes Test in England last year and defended the trophy.

“We put a lot of time and effort into preparation and got the result we wanted in that Test match and probably just assumed what we were going to do in the white-ball games. [matches] It's enough, not knowing what England will throw at us,” Healy said.

The first two days of the MCG Test will feature performances from G-Flip and Sampa the Great and the atmosphere will be similar to the 2020 T20 World Cup final when Katy Perry entertained 86,174 fans after the home team's victory .

Healy joked that some players might be waiting for selfies after the game, “but first and foremost we're here to watch cricket and it's going to be a tough game.”

The first ODI will be played on January 12 at North Sydney Oval. Day-night testing at the MCG begins on January 30.
