Azzurri Boss reveals he will leave after Moldova match and then raid the press conference

Luciano Spalletti was fired as Italian coach but will oversee their World Cup qualifiers with Moldova before leaving the post office.
Italy has not been eligible for the World Cup since 2014, when they quit in the group stage, he won a horrible start on Friday’s 2026 Championship.
Norway beat Azzurri 3-0 and they are now trailing by nine points in the UEFA qualifying match. They were six points behind Israel in Israel, missing two games. Each of the 12 runner-ups will make the playoffs.
Facing the prospect of humiliation, it is possible to miss a shortfall of 48 teams in the World Cup, which was rejected by Spalletti’s action after less than two years of working.
Spalletti revealed the decision in a fierce press conference ahead of his Moldova match against Reggio Emilia on Monday, which will now serve as his farewell.
“We spoke last night and they told me I will be assured that I will be the head coach of the national team,” Spalletti said.
“I’m sorry, given our relationship, I have no intention of giving up.
“I would rather stay and do my job, especially when things aren’t going well. But if that’s an exaggeration, then I have to accept it. I’ve always seen this role as a service to my homeland and I want to help the future of the national team.
“I think the best option is right and I’m going to terminate my contract. I’ll be there tomorrow night against Moldova. I’ve always insisted that my players are strong. Under my management, the result is their situation and I have to take responsibility.
“I love this shirt, this job and the players I coach. Tomorrow night, I will ask them what they ask from them, even if I can’t get them to perform at their best.
“I don’t want the situation that was over the previous night, rather than a great game. I kept telling the boys that they were the right people to go to the World Cup. There were already complications, but now I expect their level of awareness and let them show that they are still the right people.”
When asked about what he said during his meeting with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina, Spaletti replied: “I will continue with this group. There is an assessment on how we play these games.
“At the end of the season, many players were exhausted and we were not in the best form. But, they were my players. Even those injured could be called.”
Spalletti has led Italy to the 2024 European Cup, but has a 2-0 surprise to the European champions beat Switzerland 2-0 in the last 16 games.
He won 11 of 23 games and won 6.
Spalletti said urgently whether he would change anything.
“My world doesn’t collapse when I lose the game. There is a position between vision and acceptance of the results, but I’m far below the level required because these players are powerful players. The past is a waste of time. You don’t affect the past. Now, it’s crucial to play a game worth playing the shirt we wear.”
Spalletti rushed out after being asked if he felt betrayed by Gravina, who will now be appointed to find a successor, while Claudio Ranieri and Stefano Pioli are seen as candidates for the job.
