Billy Horschel’s pursuit of his first Ryder Cup team has just taken a big blow.
The 38-year-old professional announced Tuesday morning on Tuesday that he will undergo a right-hand surgery in Colorado next week. He will miss the next few months, but he says he hopes to return before late summer or early autumn.
“After consulting with the doctor and my team, we will have the right hip surgery in Colorado next week,” Hochell wrote. “This is an unfortunate situation with many big events left on the calendar, but it is a precaution. I’m already looking forward to the start of recovery, resuming practice and hoping to get back to the golf course in late summer/late fall.”

Horschel has won 12 games this season. He missed five cuts and recorded two top 10s. He tied for 27th in the legacy of Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) and intends to play in the following Zurich Classics, but he quit due to a hip injury. This led to the decision to perform surgery.
The schedule is not very good for the opportunity of Horshcel’s Ryder Cup.
The eight-time PGA Tour champion has played in a Presidents Cup team but has never been appointed to the Ryder Cup roster, although his dominant score in the 2014 FedEx Cup playoffs resulted in a decision to postpone the pick for the captain. Horschel missed the promotion in the first playoffs of the four playoff stops of the year (Barclays), tied for second a week later, before the draft picks of the three captains began. He is not one of them, but he won the next two events (and the FedEx Cup) to end the season.
Horschel is ranked 16th in the Ryder Cup standings, and is in the top six after being the team’s auto-qualified BMW champion in mid-August. The final six positions will be the draft pick for Keegan Bradley’s captain, who is still working to make the team himself.
Horschel’s time gap means it’s nearly impossible to divide the team on points, which means his only hope for the Ryder Cup is to return at the end of the timeline early and impress Captain Bradley with some (very) strong plays in a limited start.
The 2025 Ryder Cup is the last five Ryder Cups held at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, NY, from September 26 to 28, and have been won by the home team. Europe won 16.5-11.5 in Italy in 2023.
