Back on June 10, the Boston Bruins announced that they had hired Marco Sturm as the 30th head coach in team history, meaning that through videos posted online, they won’t leave Joe Sacco after the 2024-25 season, let alone they won’t keep the interim head coach on the interim tag into 20255-26.

According to Ty Anderson of 98.5 Sports Hub, the Bruins interviewed 14 candidates for open coaching positions before eventually landing on Sturm. Initially, the move drew objection from fans as it was seen as a “good enough” coach for Boston “settling”, especially considering that any coach at the NHL level has very little experience.
Although Sturm has a well-documented experience as a player at the NHL level, especially in the 2011 exclamation mark of winning the Stanley Cup with Bruiss, on the other hand, he hasn’t spoken loudly in his coaching career, perhaps not as loud as some other coaches who could have dealt with in Boston. But maybe they are, they just rejected that position.
Fans should be more optimistic about Sturm recruitment
Now, although Sturm may not be the expectation of Bruis fans in the next coach, especially after hearing the Dallas star fired their head coach Pete Deboer. But fans should actually be happier to hire everyone’s Sturm. The first reason is age.
The average age of the past four coaches (Claude Julien, Bruce Cassidy, Jim Montgomery and Joe Sacco) is 56 years old, but Sturm broke up with an average age of 46. Aside from that, Sturm is one quarter of the NHL who recently played in the NHL, ending his career in the 2012-13 season, while Sacco completed his career in the 2002-03 season.
His age involves reasons for this and can benefit his tenure as the Bruins head coach is his ability to attract players. In every other major sport (baseball, football and now basketball), the league is full of former players – whether they are the teams they mentor or the league as a whole. This helps coaches to be able to attract players at levels that were not possible before, because their abilities are related to what they are going through, at least in some aspects of the game.
Another reason for being optimistic about Sturm is his ability to turn the team around from obscurity. Now, the Browns aren’t a completely obscure team, but the way they’ve done this season (given their place in the drawing), putting them in a place that shows the need for huge improvements…and soon! As head coach and general manager of the German national team, Sturm led the players to further compete for their country and even led the team to the finals of the 2018 Olympics. The Germans lost the game and won the silver medal, but that was still an achievement for the country.
Sturm’s experience in Ontario’s rule should also play an important role
Prior to the 2022-23 season, Sturm was appointed head coach of the Ontario reign of the Ontario Hockey League (AHL), and was an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Kings for the last four seasons. During his reign, Sturm not only brought them into two 90-point seasons, but also entered the playoffs each season.
In his first season, Domination was unable to win the game and lost to the Colorado Hawks in two straight games. However, Sturm led Ontario to the finals after winning the first five games – the Condors who swept Bakersfield (2-0) and Abbotsford Canucks (3-0) before being swept by the Coachella Valley Firebirds (3-0).
Although Domination has been the AHL’s Pacific Division Power, it’s clear that they didn’t make a lot of progress until Sturm came out as he improved his two best seasons from the ECHL. While Boston has a solid core, it is important to note the core’s relationship with Sturm as a coach, which seems to get along well with the players.
Criticism should not be ignored
While there are many reasons to look at Sturm’s recruitment through a positive spin, it must also be remembered that this is his lead coach at the NHL level. Putting the locker room together will be key, especially after both coaches of the 2024-25 season stayed for a short time and then lost soon.
Given their track record, internal expectations should be high for players, but the belt given to him by General Manager (GM) Don Sweeney and Presidents Cam Neely should be a long traction, although fans are expected to stick to Stelm’s shoulders from day one.
