If you’re wondering if Bryson DeChambeau likes to play in Mexico City’s bomber-friendly, high-altitude terrain, you probably don’t know much about Bryson DeChambeau.
“It’s fun to hit,” he said Friday.
It’s hard to argue.
DeChambeau averaged 370 yards from the tee and hit three of the three drives above 400 yards, and his first round shot since the Masters’ 63 shots last Friday, was held at the Liv Golf’s Mexico City Tournament at De Golf Chapultepec.
“If the fairway becomes firm, it might be more [distance]he said. “Probably a lot more.”
He drove the first hole of 396 yards (his last day, led to the birdie- and raised his hands to celebrate when DeChambeau knocked back to the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational, then cleared the water on the PGA Tour and occupied 5 greens in Bay Hill.
“It’s a 390 match, and I thought, I might as well put it in the bunker and have an easy bunker shot, and luckily I did it and got it next to the hole,” Dechambeau said. “It almost climbed a relaxed eagle putt in the hole and then was lucky enough to make a two-bike. I misread the first putt. But it was a great bird.”
DeChambeau’s 63 shot has been in his first round since the Masters two weeks ago when he took a solo lead early in Sunday’s final pair with Rory McIlroy but stumbled upon that lead.
He fired 75 and tied for fifth to record his second straight win of 10.
“The driver and I feel good [today]Thankfully, it does have a bit of ingredients for me,” DeChambeau said Friday. “Driving well in Augusta without my hardcore. Working on my irons, they feel better. It’s great to be picky around the green today. Some clutch push rods were made. But all in all, it’s fun to end with a nice sensation in the last hole. ”
DeChambeau works on the irons in the series after the third round of Augusta. He said Friday he was dialing them back and becoming more comfortable.
“My hands can probably be fast when I’m under stress and things get fast,” he said. “I’ve optimized some devices and may be here soon after the PGA, but if I dial it and I’m under stress and get a quick hands again, hopefully it’ll be relieved next time.”
