Newcastle United finally ended its 70-year wait for the domestic trophy as they beat Premier League leader Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley.
These pies are seen as losers in the second EFL Cup final in three years, losing 2-0 to Manchester United on the same stage two years ago.
But this time they advanced to the occasion and wrote themselves into Newcastle folklore, a first-half header from Dan Burn followed by star forward Alexander Isak’s excellent second place.
Federico Chiesa sprained Newcastle’s nerves with a late reply, but Eddie Howe’s soldiers clung to the victory they deserved and filled the ghosts that had plagued the club for decades.

Liverpool v. Newcastle

Newcastle believes Kelleher follows the corner effort six minutes later in the second half when Isak created homes from close range, just letting informants think Guimaraes interfere with the offside game.
But just one minute later, Isak did have his goal, producing a cultural first from Jacob Murphy’s knockout, leaving Liverpool with a mountain climb.

Arne Slot’s response was to throw it to Curtis Jones, Darwin Nunez and Jones nearly halved the deficit, his vicious efforts put into practice by Nick Pope.
But after Harvey Barnes had a brilliant pull back for the Swedish striker, Kelleher showed a bigger hero on the other end to deny Isak’s brackets.
Barnes and Murphy then saw further opportunities to beg, and when the clock hooked to the middle of the eight-minute injury time, Federico Chiesa quickly popped out of the Newcastle offside trap and calmly stepped on the pope to make Liverpool hope to double the time.
