Cameron Schmidt started his draft year with an incredible hot streak, scoring 26 goals before the calendar shifts to 2025. However, with only two goals in February, his goal was very dry, with a 50-60 goal and 40 goals and 40 goals. While that’s not a good number, he’s a little disappointing considering the start of his season. Fortunately for the Vancouver Giants, he was hitting the spot again in March, with six goals away. He also scored four goals and nine points in the playoffs and has a seven-game winning streak that can be traced back to the regular season. But his work wasn’t enough to get his team against the high octane Spokane Chiefs when they fell in five games.

As he left the playoffs early, Schmidt was named Canada for the U18 world championship and quickly scored two goals and three points in his first game against Slovakia. Unfortunately, he was cold after that, scoring zero points in the next five games until he got an assist in Canada’s 7-0 gold medal match against Sweden.

Schmidt wants to follow in the footsteps of 5-foot-8 forwards Cole Caufield and Logan Stankoven as the short stature beat the odds and became a high-end NHLERS. Caufield, who has starred for the Montreal Canadiens, has scored 116 goals in 280 games so far, while Stankoven has just started and is now with the Carolina Hurricanes to score 18 goals in 95 games. Schmidt became an elite shooter, and even more in the Caufield category, with speed that extends defense and extends lasers out of goalkeepers.

Like most short players, Schmidt has pre-reviewed, tough and fearless from veterans like Conor Garland, who also showed a good career in the NHL. In fact, the way Schmidt describes himself is what Garland said multiple times when asked how to succeed in the major leagues:

“I’m just trying to use my height as an advantage…” (I’m) faster and more agile than men, I’m able to protect the puck in different ways and use my body in different ways. I’ve just been trying to solve this and improve that part of the game. ”

Schmidt’s coach Manny Viveiros also praised his strength and strength, despite being 5-foot-7 inches tall and weighing 157 pounds. When he was named CHL USA’s highest prospect challenge, he talked about his game, saying: “Although Cameron isn’t the highest player, he is one of the strongest players on our team… His explosiveness is no longer on the charts. So far, he is probably the fastest, fastest, most explosive player to date. Relieve some of their concerns.”

The only criticism of Schmidt seems to be his lack of defensive play. The term “one-dimensional” has been abandoned, but according to Viveiros, a portion of his game has improved this season. Instead of skipping as many areas as last season, he looked for Breakaways and Instant Insense, he focused on his finishing points first. He learned that a good defense often leads to further scoring opportunities, which will help him well as he enters the NHL.

Like Stankoven, Garland and Caufield, Schmidt packed a lot of punches in a small package and, considering that he was already dealing with his defensive shortcomings, don’t be surprised if we talk about his trio in the road trio.

Schmidt’s decline in production in the second half of the season seemed to hurt his draft stock as he fell into a second round in many final rankings. Meanwhile, many rankings still firmly rooted him firmly in the first round – though in the late stages. I think he will be as high or lower than Stankoven (No. 47) as Caufield. But if he ends up falling into the second round like Stankoven, then either team will catch him.

NHL Potential

Schmidt has the potential to be a top-tier scorer like Cafield, able to score 30-40 goals in his championship. He also has work ethics and two-way potential (if he continues to improve his game from hockey), becoming an effective mid-to-lowest six options, such as Garland or Stankoven. He will arrive in the NHL anyway and at least be the intermediate scorer for any team to get him. His skills are too elite to say anything else.
