Golfers are always looking for the latest device solutions to fix [enter swing problem here]. I get it. After all, as a master fitter, finding these solutions is my job, and I want to solve a problem, I have heard a lot of late: “Is the mini driver right for me?”?

So let’s get started, first of all, who is best for whom and where they are in the bag.

The mini driver sits between the traditional driver and the 3-wood, providing the player with a combination of control, distance and forgiveness. This is who can benefit from these buzzing new clubs.

Player struggling with full-size driver

For some players, a 460cc driver can be daunting and difficult to hit. Between the size and length of the shaft (range 45.5 to 46 inches), it is found that the center of the face does not occur as often as they want. Most mini drivers on the market range from 280 cc to 350 cc and are closer to the standard length of 3 wood. The test shows us that the smaller head size and shorter axis length make it easier to find the center of the face.

Accurate players

Not every hole requires a “maximum distance” type swing. On tight or tree-lined fairways, distance makes the seat more accurate. Mini Driver is a distance + control option for courses with lots of dogleg holes, where angle and position will lead to lower scores, for example, Port Town, where PGA Tour is here this week.

The mini driver can provide higher accuracy from the tee compared to the driver while still providing distances of 3 wood. If you have a priority fairway hitting the total distance, then the mini driver might be the perfect compromise.

High-speed players

High-speed players often generate enough distances, which can make controlling standard drivers challenging. Mini drivers offer more controllable alternatives while still allowing these players to benefit from their own powers.

Smaller heads and higher spin rates can help tighten the dispersion without sacrificing too much yard count. Once the ball lands, the increased spin also minimizes push-out. This gives Power Player the option to grab more aggressive lines from the tee.

Slow to medium speed player

Speed is usually equal to higher emissions and more rotations. Ease of use is crucial for players who do not generate speed. Mini drivers can provide confidence lifts and increase distances with shorter axes and easy-to-manage sizes. It is easier to launch than a traditional driver than a 3-wood. That is the winning combination in my book.

This is an ideal choice for someone who wants to replace the driver and add a mini for easier start and rotate properties.

Low start and low spin athletes

If you are like me – you have enough speed but don’t play high or spin too much – the mini works well for a 3-wood. I usually use Miki off the tee and it’s lower than I want. The mini driver has a lower center of gravity, and for me, I want to launch above 3 wood.

We’ve used mini drivers on the PGA Tour in recent years, but Karl Vilips will play the new Taylormade R7 Quad Mini Driver this week at RBC Heritage in Hilton Head. Harbour Town’s tee is narrow, Vilips chose to add the R7 Quad to improve the accuracy of his t-shirt while still seeing a distance beyond his 3 wood.
