Manchester City is interested in signing FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa to replace Ederson next season as Pep Guardiola hopes to make further changes to his team after the season is insufficient.
After a very bad first half of the 2024/25 season, the city dropped over 200 million euros in the winter transfer window, signing four players in the winter transfer window – Omar Marmoush , Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez. However, the performance has not improved significantly, with Guardiola’s side recently losing to Arsenal and Liverpool.
Guardiola hopes to replace Ederson as Manchester City’s first place after Kusanov and Rees signed two young centre-backs. The Spanish tactician reportedly turned his attention to the acquisition of Diogo Costa, which is understood to be within the scope of several European clubs. Man City made its initial connection with Porto, a potential summer motorsport for shooters to hit.
Costa, 25, has been the undisputed number one for Porto in recent years. Portugal International has done enough to attract the attention of elite European clubs in Porto. Man City now hopes the highly rated glove hand replaces its legendary Ederson by the end of the season.
Ederson’s time at Man City seems to have already started
Ederson has been an excellent servant to Man City since joining SL Benfica in 2017. He made 359 appearances at the Etihad Stadium, winning six Prime Ministers Leagues, one Champions League, two FA Cups and four League Cups.
The 31-year-old is very close to a transition to ensure the summer transfer to the Saudi professional league. However, no agreement was finally reached because Manchester City refused to base on its asking price. Ederson has agreed to personal terms with Al-Ittihad, but the club is still separated when it charges.
This led to the Brazilian scorer living in the Manchester club. But Ederson and the City aren’t a good thing this season. Manchester City’s No. 1 stayed away from his best form and made mistakes, which made Guardiola’s side pay a lot of points. As a result, the sky blue plan continued to move forward in the summer and replaced him with Costa.
Diogo Costa will be an excellent long-term replacement for Ederson
Manchester City’s next focus is to solve the goalkeeper situation. The club’s chief hopes Ederson will go at the end of the season and will be replaced by Diogo Costa.
Costa is a modern sweeper with excellent calm and passing skills on the ball, which will be a wonderful long-term investment for Sky Blue. He hasn’t reached his peak at the age of 25, and if Manchester City can get him, they will be able to enjoy the best time of his career.
The Portuguese International seems to be a regular goalkeeper for senior teams since the 2021/22 season, and therefore has entered the youngsters in Porto, which appears to be rising later this year. Moving to the city may be the perfect choice for Costa Rica.
