I’m a mini driver skeptic. Now, this model replaces my favorite club

Putters are described as “emotional” clubs because you have a connection with them – but in my case, I have a special connection with my Miki and I.

For most of the last five years, I picked up a Taylormade Sim Ti Rocket 3 wood at the start of Covid Lockdowns in 2020 and only used once in the first two months I owned it.

But thanks to its forgiving size, V-steel sole and low rotational performance, it quickly became my favorite club. It’s a club that’s popular on the PGA Tour with the likes of Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland on the PGA Tour, and is still in the game model.

I’ve been through several full bag accessories as a gear editor, but the SIM is with me. This year, I even re-upgrade it with Vinku Ventus TR Blue to help me swing time better, and even better results.

But finally, this spring, when I received the R7 Quad Mini driver, my respected 3 wood met the race.

This is why I found out about using the R7 Quad Mini driver and why I first officially announced that it has a permanent home in my schoolbag.

Mini clearance

Granted, I didn’t know the purpose of the mini driver until this year. I know this will work for my game because there are more 3 wood replacements than driver replacements, but my feeling is that my 3 wood is already a mini driver.

I could fly at about 280 yards at 164 mph ball speed at about 280 yards and peak around 118 feet. My ideal trajectory is about 120 to 125, so that’s almost correct. But here’s the problem: Of the five photos I took in my tests, the club only rotated about 2600 rpm on average.

It’s almost a perfect drive to rotate numbers, but with 3 wood, it can cause some inconsistent rotation while the accident falls off, or shoots unexpectedly. Of course, it’s great to be able to hit the 3-wood 280 and push out the 295 or 300, but I’m often facing that photo in the course. I often use 3 wood because I need to hit it Fewer Greater than 300 or 290 yards.

If I have to hit less than the driver, I don’t want to give up 50 yards and hit the hybrid because my 3 wood also goes too far.

When I tested the R7 and other mini drives (the quadrilateral is just my favorite one, you might find yourself prefering the other!) – My ball speed numbers are similar (164 mph), but with higher rotations (3,200) and higher peak heights (125). Additionally, my ball speed consistency is getting bigger due to larger clubs and higher MOIs.

Spin is your friend and it will help you hit direct shots. So if I can get more and still keep pace, that’s a great thing.

The ball is still about 10 yards short (270) and pushes it to 290, which is a more useful number for me. The mini driver is just better for me than the 3-wood now.

3 wood, you can swing like a driver

Here I realize the benefits of mini drivers in 3 woods. With a larger head size and a deeper face, you can turn the mini driver taller and then make it more like a drive than a 3-wood.

Trackman said I hit Miki on the t-shirt and hit a small driver, but my TEE Tee tee tee is about an inch higher than the 3 wood, which led me to hit a mini driver about one height.

Because of the bigger and more forgiving head, I felt like I could swing more easily and freely – more like a driver – because I didn’t have to worry about hitting it myself compared to 3 wood.

I get the benefits from the tee while still surprisingly getting great performance from the deck, although 80% of the time, I’m using Mini Off Tee.

Adjustability has unlimited potential

With a quad-port-adjusted weighted system, the R7 quad Quad does separate itself from other mini drives. The system is modeled from the original 20-year-old Taylormade R7 driver, but it offers an awesome fitting tool that is almost unparalleled.

When I first put the R7 in the bag, I felt it attracted so much. The mini driver is shorter than the standard driver, so the heel is shorter than the foot, so the face is easier.

I usually play some weight on my toes because I tend to hit the ball off my toes, which prevents my shot from overdrawing and allows me to fade out. So I wanted to move a little weight toward my toes, but I like the performance of the club, two 13g weights in the rear.

Fortunately, Taylormade not only sells two 4g and two 13g weights for the R7 quarter standard. Through the test, the first combination I tried proved to be the best combination for me to place 7 grams of weight on my front toe, 4 grams on my right toe, 13 grams and 10 grams of weight in the rear port. Now, I have a club that I naturally want to attract, but I can work in other ways if I need to.

I was also able to set the adjustable sleeve to open one button to make the club slightly open, and the look I liked helped me with the correct starter line as well.

Tommy Fleetwood and his fitter Taylormade senior travel manager Adrian Rietveld used adjustability to fly the R7 Quad’s look and ball to Fleetwood’s BRNR Mini, which just played for the new Mini this week at the Travelers Championship.

In a recent fit, I hit three balls before we thought it wasn’t worth beating it.

I never thought I would meet a mini driver, but we are here and I totally understand why it’s so good for me. I’m not claiming that mini drivers are for everyone, but I mean, if you’ve been skeptical, it might be time to rethink.
