Collin Morikawa’s putting coach says all great putting do this

Advances in technology have completely changed the way we practice and play golf. Data-driven insights allow instructors and players to break down aspects of the game in detail – which leads to some interesting findings.

What once considered basic teaching concepts are now being reviewed and updated, thanks to innovations such as startup monitors, pressure plates, 3D analysis, etc. A good example is the release in the putter.

On the latest Instagram of the top 100 golf teachers Chris Como, Stephen Sweeney, the top coach entered tour players like Collin Morikawa and Shane Lowry, explaining that many lecturers and amateurs believed that the toes of putters should pass through the heels in the stroke.

“It’s a myth for a long time,” Sweeney said.

Sweeney explained that this is a concept when we can only analyze putter strokes on a 2D camera with face-to-face angles, which makes the putter look more horizontally released patterns.

These old putter evaluations show that when the player takes the putter back, it is taken off and gives the toes the appearance of the toes behind the putter. When they played the influence, Sweeney explained that the putters were repositioned, which made it look like the toes and heels were flush.

“Then, when they added the attic to the putter, it looked like the 2D camera above the toes, the toes passed the heel,” Sweeney said.

Thanks to advances in technology, we can now have a better understanding of what is actually happening in putters, and the key elements to emulate from some of the best putters in golf, such as Tiger Woods.

Sweeney explained that this has nothing to do with the rotational release, but with the vertical release.

Players should consider letting their hands rise naturally, rather than trying to seek more horizontal surrounding movements.

“So, understanding the correct way of releasing the putter and controlling the axis angle will actually help control the club face and control that release mode,” Sweeney said.
