DJED Spence has publicly announced how former Tottenhams boss Antonio Conte “destroyed” his confidence and said he had “a conversation” with the Italians while in charge.
Right back Spence signed a £20m deal from Middlesbrough in 2022, but then manager Conte barely played him, insisting that the former Nottingham Forest lender was a “club investment” rather than his own signing.
The 24-year-old has been on loan at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa for some time since North London, but has broken into Ang Poscoglo this season with two defenders often appearing.
Spence: “I had a conversation with Conte”
Speaking of him at Conte Rio Ferdinand gift Podcast: “It’s not a great feeling. Especially when I came to the club high, I was confident and buzzing and I had a great season and just won the promotion.
“And then it was like hitting a brick wall. It broke my confidence a little bit. I was young and really heard it.
“I knew it was trash at the time. It wasn’t a good feeling. I even went to a club [puffs out cheeks and shrugs shoulders] And, “What am I doing?”
He added: “I think that man is [Conte] Not satisfied with anything.
“Even if you do the right thing, you’re like, ‘Did I do the right thing?’ because he’s not a complimentary person.
“I probably had a conversation with him.”

Spence: “I’ve always been too modest”
Spence also discussed the turning point in his Spurs career this season, which has become an important part of the Spurs.
“I think I’m a victim of being too modest,” he said. “Thinking things will happen through things that don’t do nothing and have nothing to say. But sometimes you have to express yourself.
“I felt like I gave too much respect to the players and the surroundings because it was Tottenham. I came from the Forest and I was going to the Premier League, the top six clubs, I thought, ‘Phew, that’s big.
“I don’t think I have too much respect for me, I’m too modest about everything.
“When I went there, I saw players with big guys like Harry Kane and Sonny [Heung-Min Son]I was thinking, “I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes.”
“But that’s probably my biggest mistake, to do it, not to express how I should have it.”
When asked about this change in attitude, Spence replied: “I might say this season is the beginning of the year.
“I think it just happened naturally. I don’t have time to waste now.
