Sporting also issued an official statement in honor of Pereira’s long and influential career as a scout.

“Portuguese Sports Club hopes to express condolences for the death of Aurelio Da Silva Pereira, 77, on Tuesday.

“He was born on October 1, 1947 and joined the Sporting CP to play football and later left Benfica Club Futebol to become a coach.

“He returned to the club and coached young teams for about 20 years. In 1988, he founded and became the head of recruitment, and since then, his story has been much more than well-known.

“He discovered many of the greatest national talents and brought them to sports where they grew up and flourished and later entered the biggest stages of world football.

“From Paulo Futre to Luis Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo, but also the youngest talent, Aurelio Pereira has taken a lot of responsibility for the careers of football figures in several countries over the past 40 years.

“He is a leader in the career field and everyone has seen one person. He won two ‘Strommp’ awards and the ‘Golden Lion’ and in 2012 the club was called Sporting’s Academy and he followed the main training ball.

“In 2016, he saw the Portuguese national team win the European Championship in France, where he found ten players. Their nickname was “Aurelios”. In 2017, he received the “Sports Value” medal from the city of Lisbon, and in 2018, UEFA awarded him the “Merit” award for his unparalleled contribution to the development of soccer in Portugal and European.

“He will always be remembered as one of the greatest names in the history of national football and, most importantly, in the history of Portuguese clubs at the Sports Club.
