Aston Villa unfortunately missed a place in the Champions League but should win the Europa League next season, former defender Richard Dunne said.
As Unai Emery’s side ended up being sixth in the Premier League, a goal at Old Trafford proved to be expensive on the last day of the season.
But Dunn said they could continue to win the second division of the following season and follow suit after shocking this disappointment.
He told William Hill Vegas: “The goal that is not allowed is a joke. You can understand Aston Villa’s frustration.
“It’s disappointing that they are not in the Champions League, but I think they are now leaving their favorites to win the Europa League next season.
“They should see next season as a chance to win the European trophy. So it’s a disappointing ending for the season, but it looks positive for the future.
“They will look for the Champions League again in the matches there or in the top five, which is great for them. However, the Europa League is their chance to get a trophy, and they haven’t done it in a long time.”
Villa won the trophy last time in 1996.
