Former Firebird finds home in San Jose TheAHL.com

When San Jose Sharks sign veterans Andrew Poturalski and Jimmy Schulte They didn't just add depth to their organization in free agency this summer – they added two of the AHL's best players at their respective positions.

Poturalski is a two-time AHL scoring champion and two-time Calder Trophy winner and is widely considered one of the league's top centers. Schulte has become one of the AHL's top defensemen as he helped the Coachella Valley Firebirds reach the Calder Cup finals back-to-back with Poturalski.

The Barracudas have added more free agents than expected through the first two and a half months of the 2024-25 season. Poturalski was instrumental in driving a top-five power play and one of the league's best offenses, while Schulte dominated a stingy defensive corps and a top-tier penalty kill.

Together they have played a key role in helping the new team get off to its best start in years.

While their contributions on the ice are obvious, their biggest impact may be felt off the ice.

“They've been great for us,” Barracuda coach said John McCarthy. “They've really changed the culture in our room. The way they treat other players and come to the ice every day is contagious.

In November, Schulte was named the sixth captain in franchise history, although this was his first season with the Barracuda.

“Jimmy has been a leader from day one,” McCarthy said. “His style and professionalism make me honored to coach.”

Although Schulte has never worn the captain's “C” at the professional level before, he served as an alternate captain on multiple occasions and was a team captain three times during his collegiate career at St. Cloud State University. The new role didn't change his attitude or demeanor.

“A big part of my job is to help people with problems and help them make a smooth transition into professional hockey,” Schulte said. “I remember what I went through when I was younger, so I try to help them.”

Poturalski was especially proud when Schulte was named captain.

“Super proud,” Poturalski said. “J-Mac (McCarthy) told me right away that I couldn't think of anyone more deserving of this. Jimmy was a captain at so many levels…three years in college, which is rare. He does the right thing every day. work hard, stay humble, and set an example for everyone.

The connection between Poturalski and Schulte extends beyond the ice. The two were roommates on the road during their time in the Coachella Valley, where they formed a close friendship. Their families were also close, with Schulte becoming a de facto uncle to Poturalski's two children.

“Poturaski is a guy that I've had a lot of respect for the last two years,” Schulte said. “He was a captain at Coachella Valley and I learned a lot from him as my roommate.”

The Barracudas have emerged as a Western Conference contender this season and are expected to end a four-year playoff drought. Winning is often a learned skill, and the Sharks' offseason moves have accelerated it. In addition to Poturalski and Schuldt, they also signed Lucas Carlson and added proven AHL players such as Colin White and Joey Keaneand veterans Scott Sabourin and Justin Bailey. The combination of experience and youth helped the team gel quickly.

“We have a really good combination,” Schulte said. “[The young guys] It's going well.

Poturalski echoed the sentiment.

“It's definitely an exciting time. We have a great team of veterans and rookies. It's fun to jump right in and be a part of it.

“Schultz is a great captain and leader,” Bordeleau said. “He and Potsy brought so much energy and positivity to the room. They were great on and off the ice.

President Joe Weir The importance of signing players who have had success in the AHL but are still pursuing NHL opportunities was emphasized. Both Poturalski and Schulte fit this mold perfectly. They remain motivated to get back to the top level of the game.

“Every day, my goal is to push and get to that level,” Schulte said. “I believe I can, and I'm working hard to improve every day.”

That dedication hasn't gone unnoticed by teammates, including rookie guard Jack Furlong.

“Being around Jim the last few months, especially in the summer, you could see his professionalism,” Furlong said. “He's someone I really respect. The way he works, both on and off the ice, is a huge part of his success.

In many ways, Poturalski and Schulte were kindred spirits. Both were college stars who went undrafted but carved out remarkable careers. Their winning mentality and leadership continue to set the tone for a Barracuda team that has become one of the toughest teams in the league.
