A BBC documentary reports on changing working patterns among UK employees, highlighting the link to an increase in golfing this week

The Panorama program, broadcast on January 20, 2025, focuses on the social changes brought about by flexible working and its impact on lifestyles. In a feature at Brockett Hall in Hertfordshire, the investigative series discussed how the number of games played in the UK and Ireland has tripled since before the pandemic. According to figures obtained by the BBC from The Revenue Club*, the number of tee times booked during the week has increased by 350%.

It has been suggested that golfers are taking advantage of changes in work arrangements to spend more time on the course, creating greater demand for tee times at a time when many golf clubs have historically been quiet. One club member who works flexibly at the venue was interviewed and said hybrid working arrangements were a benefit that could increase productivity while providing a better work-life balance.

The program continues to discuss the merits of remote and in-office working, while some question the output and innovation of offline workers.

In other data provided by Income Club, afternoon playing time increased by 10%, indicating that golfers are taking advantage of cost savings from reduced commute times or the ability to start earlier to play more rounds after get off work.

“Particularly during the summer, we see higher utilization of our afternoon tee times, with members and visitors taking full advantage of flexible working arrangements to play.” Rob Corcoran, director of The Revenue Club, said: “Changes in playing patterns highlight golf clubs’ approach to flexible working arrangements. The importance of pricing approaches that take into account the additional needs of remote workers within the membership base.”

“In the absence of daily social interaction at work, golf clubs have a fantastic opportunity to provide the community that many people want, and this aligns perfectly with the sense of belonging that golf club membership can provide.”
