Portugal's Salgados Golf Club has begun a €3.2 million renovation of its 18-hole golf course and is further investing in its golf facilities, including a new fleet of golf carts.

The four-month stadium renovation project began last month and is expected to be completed in February.

Simon Doyle, Vice President of Agronomy at Troon, will oversee course improvements alongside the Troon design and development team, including the unveiling of a new island green marked hole as part of an expansion of the on-course lake to increase birdlife Habitat and flora.

The project includes replacing the property's 30-year-old irrigation system with a new, state-of-the-art Rain Bird irrigation system that will optimize irrigation use of regional gray water.

Salgados first opened in 1994 and is the only golf course in Portugal to use 100% wastewater/non-potable water in the course irrigation system. In addition, all tee boxes will be laser leveled and bunkers will be reshaped and filled with new sand to improve playability.

In the process of expanding the lake to gain more wildlife habitat and increase water capacity, crews will transform the par-3 12th hole, which currently contains the existing lake, into an island-wide green surrounded by water.

The new holes are reminiscent of other famous island greens around the world, bordering native rock and ranging from 96 meters (105 yards) from the front tee to 135 meters (148 yards) from the back tee, adding to the drama and beauty of course .

Since January 2023, Highgate Portugal has been revitalizing the golf and hotel experience at the beautiful resort on Portugal's Atlantic coastline.

In August 2023, Highgate appointed Troon to oversee golf operations, course agronomy and sales and marketing. There are also plans to make further improvements to the hotel's three hotels and a world-class conference center, with the Marriott and Westin brands designated as on-site venues.
