Justin Thomas’s big weekend at the Royal Bank of Canada legacy kicked off on Saturday at Harbour Town Golf Links.
Thomas, who has not won the championship since the 2022 PGA championship, entered the third round with two shots leading Si Woo Kim and Russell Henley.
Within 5 seconds, Thomas shot his tee into the waste area on the left. Thomas’ golf ball moved slightly as some loose obstacles around his ball, which led to his call for rules officials.
The official confirmed that Thomas was in the garbage area, not the bunker, which meant he was allowed to move loose barriers around the ball. However, the official did point out that if Thomas made his ball move, he would be fined for a one-stroke.
“My ball did move a small part of it down because there was only a few things around and I was moving the rocks,” Thomas told the officials.
“Do you think you made it move?” the official asked.
“I would think so. I mean, I would assume,” Thomas replied.
“What we’re going to do is we’re going to try to change its location,” the official said. “Then, if we can, we’re going to check out some videos.”
Thomas birds, but once the PGA Tour lowers the fine for one stroke, it becomes par.
This is the first time Thomas has entered the weekend since the 2022 Farmers Insurance Open.
The two-time PGA champion winner almost snatched his drought in last month’s Valspar Championship, but Viktor Hovland surpassed him to extend his unwind winning streak.
Thomas won 15 titles from 2015-2022, but is still looking for a 16th victory.
“I want to win so badly,” Thomas said Friday. “I’m tired of being asked. I almost feel like I’m past and you guys stop asking me, which is good, but I’d rather end that. I think it’s just something I feel like I’m doing, being there, being there for years so many – I just let me trust my abilities.
“I have a lot of confidence and confidence in what I can do. So I just have to let it happen.”
