When Tommy Fleetwood tested the new Taylormade R7 Quad Mini driver at RBC Heritage two months ago, the results were enough to get Fleetwood to bring the club home a few weeks before his next match began.
Two years ago, during the same event, Fleetwood tested the then new BRNR Mini and eventually tested the new BRNR MINI. He may have become the most prolific mini driver user of golf since, as the original BRNR Mini didn’t lose a place in Fleetwood’s bag.
Until this week.
Tommy Fleetwood’s new mini driver test
When Fleetwood made its first extensive testing with the new R7 Quad, it was the Hilton Head, a major update to the Taylormade mini driver platform. Compared to the backtracking theme of Taylormade’s Mini Driver version, the R7 has a four-port TAS weighting system that is similar to its eponymous name compared to the front and rear adjustable weighting system of BRNR MINI and subsequent BRNR MINI copper.
Adrian Rietveld, senior travel manager at Fleetwood and Taylormade, conducted extensive testing of Harbour Town’s range, matching not only the flight of Fleetwood’s BRNR, but also the appearance. Taylormade released the awesome behind-the-scenes look of these conversations. Fleetwood, along with Adam Scott and Si Woo Kim, became one of the most famous mini driver users, initially thought the R7 Quad looked too flat.
Despite obtaining a large number and matching the appearance of the BRNR, it can be converted to a 2-degree loft and lowered one from the upright environment, the BRNR remains in the bag, heading to Harbour Town, where Fleetwood does more tests at home.
When he returned to the PGA Tour at the Truist Championship in May, BRNR was still in the bag.
Switching in Connecticut
But this week, at the Travelers Championship, Fleetwood decided to test the Vinegar Ventus TR Blue 6-X axis again in his mini game. That was the first axle in the club when he got the club, but he switched the driver axle at the start of the season, switching the driver axle with the Velocore+ 6-X for the driver. He added the same axes to his mini-mount, but Reitveld noticed that he had increased his spin speed by 300 rpm from the beginning of the year.
At first, Reitveld said they were just going to test the shaft, but they eventually decided to throw the R7 Quad Head back. That’s when they notice something.
“We found out that we can actually spin 3,000 degrees at 3,000 degrees,” Reitveld told Golf Tureding. “It’s important to him. It’s the difference between carrying the ball in 275 yards or 280. So at 280, it’s a real weapon for him.”
With higher launches, longer carry and the same look and balls flying to former gamers, Fleetwood felt good enough after a meeting to throw the new Mini into the bag this week at TPC River Highlands. The venue is key, as the course is one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour, and the mini driver will be an often called option.
Since Scott already uses the R7 Quad, you can now count on two of the most famous mini driver players using Taylormade’s latest offerings.
