The third-seeded Spaniard had his say about the 18-year-old rising star from Brazil after his win over Nishioka in Melbourne (6-0, 6-1, 6-4) on Wednesday.
Alcaraz didn't see all of Fonseca's 7-6(1) 6-3 7-6(5) victory over the ninth seed Andrei Rublevbut what he saw was enough to leave a lasting impression.
“I saw some at the beginning and at the end of the game,” Alcaraz told reporters. “What can I say about that? It's unbelievable. Alcaraz is convinced Fonseca has the potential to move up the rankings quickly, despite being playing in his first Grand Slam main draw.
“This is someone I have to take care of, so to speak,” he said. “He'll be there. It's just the start of the year, only one win in a major, but he'll be there.
“We will soon add Joao Fonseca's name to the list of the best players in the world.”
