Preview of Real Sociedad v Manchester United
United headed to San Sebastián to know that the Europa League was their last chance to meet silverware this season.
It was another painful sport for Manchester United, who struggled on the court and stood out from new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe through a series of unpopular cost-cutting measures.
The latest chapter came on Sunday when Ruben Amorim’s side withdrew from the FA Cup after losing to Fulham to Old Trafford with a 1-1 draw – Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee, who missed it.
From a football and financial standpoint, winning the Europa League is huge for the club.
It will provide Amorim with a platform to start his squad rebuilding and increase revenue streams by taking a spot in the Champions League next season and worrying about PSR sanctions.
The problem they had was that the second-tier European matches were still full of excellent teams such as Bambao, Roma, Tottenham Hotspur and Lyon.
Real Sociedad also falls into this category, and the two legs on the Spanish side should be close.
After running inconsistent forms, they ranked ninth in La Liga but presented a huge challenge on the day, proving four points in two home games against Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
