Next Spoon: Luke Cranton! The 21-year-old PGA Tour player joined me in a scoop of chocolate fudge brownie ice cream before the Travelers Championship. In this interview, Cranton participated in 14 PGA Tour games, made 10 layoffs, and won the runner-up twice, three top five and four top ten.
He made his professional debut earlier this month at RBC Canadian Open and I’m excited to sit down with the new pro, considering all his success. It turns out I left the interview, which was a bigger fan of Cranton – his personality, his way of talking about sisters and his ability to tell stories.
We talked about all kinds of things, from how he got into the game to a man on the street, who helped his faith grow to his favorite movies.
Although one of his favorite stories is about how he met Jason Wiertel, a caddie.
I met Wiertel on Sunday before the Masters, the chips and putting finals at the Augusta Nationals. When one of the tallest men I’ve ever met approached Herzig, introduced himself to Devine and me, and invited us to sit with him on the 18th green green, I walked with my friend Gabby Herzig and Emma Devine. Wiertel was there to support his daughter’s friends and cheer for the children as if they were his own.
The four of us sat together and he told us every girl who was putting it. Where they come from, how their family looks and how nervous they are. I’ve never met someone who is passionate about junior golf. Why are the kids who don’t have their own children on the moon. I remember thinking that every junior athlete should have a support system that includes someone like Wiertel. After apart, I asked Herzger how she knew him. “That’s Luke Clanton’s caddie,” she said.
Fast forward this episode of this episode. Herzig told me a little bit about how Wiertel’s daughter played in his ultimate role as Clanton Bag, and I wanted the full story.
“So we’re in the North and South amateurs, I think that’s the summer before college. So I’m 18…I’m hitting the ball sideways on the members, and technically I shouldn’t be there. But I’m with a member and we’re just bumping into some balls, I see a little girl, and a big guy, like 6’7”. I was thinking, who is this guy? I touched the pitch wedge and the little girl walked up to me and said, “How far did you hit?” We kind of started the conversation and Jason walked over. Jason was talking to me, just trying to focus his mind…He was like, “Do you have a caddie this week?” I said, “Oh, I have Bill,” an older gentleman about 80 years old. I was like, “He probably won’t be in the game,” Vilter said, “Well, if you want to win, I’ll get my bag.”
I was like, ‘Wow. Slow down a little man, I don’t know who you are. So, through Instagram, I found him and we texted back and forth. I was like, “This is my serving time, it’s 6:50 in the morning. Game game. If you want to show up, show up. So I got there, like 5:20 and he had a towel in his back pocket in the range. I was like, “Okay, this guy is serious.” ”
So we never really talk about it, we never hang out. We went to the first t-shirt and we immediately hit it…we continued to win, which wasn’t even the best part. I was giving a speech when the ceremony happened and I was looking around trying to find him. I couldn’t find him, so I texted him. I said, “Where are you?” He left, ‘Oh, I’m a little ball for my daughter.‘
So, after he won, he drove and he immediately drove to the golf course to compete for his daughter in the nine-hole competition. So I went over there and said to him, “Man, I want you to put it on my schoolbag. You are not only a great person, but you are a great father and have good morals.” So he has paid a lot of awards for me among multiple American amateurs, he has contributed a lot to me on many PGA Tours, and now we are here. ”
Screaming to Lucy Wiertel for her role in letting her father play. I’m glad the whole thing was solved!
